Jun. 30th, 2020 12:27 pmYukina had never paid the whispers of the courtiers much mind, and that had been her mistake.
Her father had been a Demosian envoy to a far-off land where he'd met her mother, and they'd had her, but she doesn't remember the homeland of her mother. She'd been brought to Demos as a child and raised here in the capital. Despite being raised as Demosian as anyone else, she'd always looked like a foreigner, and had had several suitors interested in her exotic looks.
One of those interested had been the king, and Yukina hadn't taken the warnings about the jealous queen's wrath seriously until it had been far too late.
She doesn't know what the charge had been. The trial was quick and private, and before she knew it, she was guilty. She was condemned, with not even her father able to save her. She'd seen the queen smirking cruelly at her as she'd fallen to her knees in tears, pleading for her life. Demos offered no clemency, she was told.
She was led to the entrance to the dungeon, a trapdoor in the floor. She'd been given a waterskin and a pouch full of dried jerky and hard bread as rations, and told that if she could escape the labyrinth, she'd learn her freedom. The guard had then laughed. Nobody escapes the labyrinth.
Before Yukina had been forced into the darkness beneath the trapdoor, an old woman, the court crone, had come up to her. She'd put her hands on Yukina's stomach and muttered some sort of spell, but as far as she could tell, nothing happened. A blessing from the queen, the crone had said, and a curse as well. Enjoy your life in the labyrinth, girl.
It's been an hour since she was pushed into the darkness, falling fifteen or twenty feet onto a soft bed of moss, and she doesn't know what that means. Her 'life' in the labyrinth? Isn't she supposed to die here? Maybe it's just the dark Demosian sense of humor.
She hears running water somewhere in these twisting stone corridors, so she'll be able to drink. There are torches on the wall offering a bit of dim illumination, and she's grabbed one to take with her. Maybe she really can find her way out of here.
It's supposed to house a terrible monster, but she hasn't seen or heard anything. Maybe that's just a myth?
